OnTologies in Anesthesiology Research Ghent
Being in Control
You wouldn’t trust black-box machine learning to decide whether an incoming asteroid poses a threat to humanity. In the same way, you likely wouldn’t allow a black-box algorithm to guide you through a surgical procedure. But asteroids or patients are numerous, yet astronomers and doctors are scarce and not infallible themselves. Some degree of automation would indeed be very helpful.
These examples involve weighty decisions, and we expect them to be made instantaneously, through fundamental knowledge and insight. Safe and effective medical practice requires judicious consideration of the medical context, eventually leading to individualised therapy.
What is OnTARGet?
The world is evolving towards knowledge-enhanced technologies to support decision making . However, no semantic framework exists that allows for bedside clinical decision making in perioperative medicine.
And that’s what this project aims at: to develop a computational semantic framework to serve as a basis for knowledge-enhanced automation techniques in perioperative medicine.
